Silver, jade inlay, made by Richard Llewellyn Benson Rathbone, Chester hallmark, 1898-99

The design of this silver casket was very much influenced by Celtic art forms. It was made to hold a scroll which was presented to William Rathbone VI on 11 February 1899, his 80th birthday. Its maker, Richard Rathbone, taught copper and brass work at the Liverpool University School of Applied Art from 1897-1901. The Rathbones were a prominent Liverpool family involved in business, the arts and philanthropy.

Given by Mrs Hugh Rathbone, 1951
