Banner firescreen

A banner with a pattern of roses and geometrical pattern.

Berlin woolwork, silk and glass beads on canvas, about 1850-70

Between 1800 and 1850 the quality of naturalistic floral design in some textiles, especially Berlin woolwork, deteriorated. Individual flower species were often no longer recognizable. Flowers became more stylised, as on this small firescreen. Hung on a pole, such firescreens shielded Victorian ladies' faces from the heat of an open fire.
