Naturalism

Detail of a glass object showing the fine workmanship.

Designers and makers have always wanted to copy what they saw in nature. The natural world was fascinating and made even more so by scientific discoveries. People have often made everyday objects in imitation of natural forms, such as vegetables, fruit and animals. Sometimes they made them to look like natural materials, such as semi-precious stones. Many household items had some form of surface decoration with flowers, fruit, birds or insects.
