Drinking beer

A photograph of a ceramic jug with a handle. It has a detailed design.

After about 1700, drinkers usually expected to be offered their own mug or glass rather than having to share one. Beer was kept in barrels and drawn off into a jug. If you liked to drink a health to Lord Nelson or the Cotton Spinners, you could choose a jug or mug decorated to suit. Liverpool potters happily supplied the American market with pots celebrating George Washington when he defeated the British in the American Revolution of 1775-1783.
