Drinking wine and spirits

A photograph of a plain black bottle.

After about 1700, it became common to share a bowl of punch rather than to drink from the same cup. The punch was ladled out into individual glasses. If you were a Liverpool merchant or shipmaster wanting to drink to the success of your ship's latest voyage, a local pottery would make you a bowl decorated with the ship. The decoration on these pieces shows what people were drinking to, a couple of hundred years ago.
