Rummer

A photograph of an elegant glass on a square stand.

About 1800

This piece is engraved 'The Gylikhied of 68 guns struck to the Veteran'. To strike (one's colours) means to surrender. The ships are shown firing broadsides at each other. A rummer is a glass with a big bowl and a short stem. The name does not come from rum but from a German type of glass, a roemer.
