Gilded and lacquered decoration on a copper alloy base, made in Japan, about 1900-1910
The design has been pricked through a paper pattern onto the metal. The parts to be gilded were then roughened by scratching with a sharp tool. Gold was attached to the pattern by rubbing it onto the roughened surface. The areas between the gilding have been painted with black lacquer, which are then fixed to the metal by firing in a kiln.
