Earthenware, made by T & J and J Mayer, Staffordshire, about 1840

This table is most unusual because it is made from earthenware. It has been highly decorated with coloured transfer-prints. The printed decoration was made by inking an engraved copper plate with several colours. Although this took longer than inking the plate with a single colour, it was still quicker and cheaper than painting the decoration.

Provenance unknown.
