Ratoff studio ceramics collection

Pam and Len Ratoff

About this collection

The 108 objects in this collection were bequeathed to National Museums Liverpool by Dr. Len and Mrs. Pamela Ratoff. They acquired the objects over the latter half of their lives by selecting objects they found aesthetically pleasing, with no eye to a future investment or idea of the ‘collection’ as a whole. Nevertheless they provide a strong cross section of British Studio Pottery in the late 20th century.

Len and Pamela were Liverpool natives and childhood sweethearts who had met through the Jewish Youth Club in Princes Road. They were both well respected figures in the National Heath Service in Liverpool and frequented the Bluecoat Display Centre where some of these pieces were purchased.

They also owned a home in Llangwm, Gwynedd that allowed them to forge links with ceramicists in the North Wales area. Pamela had previous connections to the Llangwm, having been evacuated there in the Second World War to live with her aunt.
