Rose Wylie was born in Kent. She studied at Folkestone and Dover Art Schools and later at Goldsmiths, where she also met her husband, the painter Roy Oxlade (1929–2014). Wylie stopped painting to raise a family, but after 20 years, resumed her practice and completed an MA at the Royal College of Art, London.
This painting depicts the private view of Wylie’s exhibition at the Approach Gallery in London in 2011. The figures include Rose Wylie and the art critic Nancy Durrant who were present on the opening night. Wylie was the first prize-winner of the John Moores Painting Prize in 2014.
