Ben Johnson working on 'The Liverpool Cityscape'

In 2008 Liverpool will become European Capital of Culture. To celebrate this, and to create a lasting legacy for the city, National Museums Liverpool, together with the Liverpool Culture Company and Professor Phil Redmond CBE and Mrs Alexis Redmond, have commissioned the artist Ben Johnson to create a major painting, 'The Liverpool Cityscape'.

'The Liverpool Cityscape' will represent Liverpool at a pivotal moment in its history. The painting will join the internationally famous collection of the Walker Art Gallery where it will be displayed before moving to its final home in the new Museum of Liverpool.

Exhibition, 24 May - November 2008

A major exhibition, 'Ben Johnson’s Liverpool Cityscape 2008 and the World Panorama Series', will be sponsored by the University of Liverpool and held at the Walker Art Gallery (24 May - November 2008). In the exhibition the new painting of Liverpool will be joined by Johnson’s other world cities series of panoramas, including Jerusalem, Zürich and Hong Kong and paintings representing Chicago and Paris.
