'Virgin and Child with Angels', Joos van Cleve
Oil on panel, 85.5 x 65.5cm
Accession Number WAG9864
Joos van der Beke (called Cleve after his native town) can be documented in Antwerp from 1511. Joos and his workshop produced a large number of devotional panels devoted to the Virgin and the Holy Family.
Joos worked in a style typical of the Antwerp Mannerists using colourful and elaborate costumes, fluttering drapery and showy detail of plants, architecture and landscape.
He was also one of the first artists to introduce the Italianate style to the Netherlands. This painting reveals the influence of Leonardo da Vinci, especially in the forms of the angels.
