'Landscape of the Moon's last phase', Paul Nash, 1943/44
© Tate, London 2011
Oil on canvas, 63.5 x 75.8cm
Accession Number WAG3143
This is a view of Wittenham Clumps in Berkshire. It features regularly in Nash's late mystical landscapes which follow in the English Romantic tradition of Palmer and Blake.
The Sun, Moon and the changing seasons became personal symbols of life and death. The place itself, the site of ancient earthworks, evokes humankind's primitive past.
