'Nude holding a curtain' c1634Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino (1591 - 1666)Pen and ink, 20.3 x 24.3cm
This drawing was probably intended as a preparatory study for a painting, perhaps of Venus or another mythological lover. It may be connected to the picture of Mars, Venus and Cupid of 1634, now in the Galleria Estense at Modena, Italy. Guercino was one of the most talented draughtsmen of his time. His work was enthusiastically collected throughout Europe.
