'Liverpool from the Bowling Green' 1769

Michael Angelo Rooker (1746 - 1801)

Watercolour on paper, laid on card, 31.4 x 76cm

'Liverpool from the Bowling Green', Michael Angelo Rooker

Although Rooker specialized in topographical watercolours his usual subjects were country towns or medieval ruins in rural settings. This view of a modern, expanding port is unusual in his work.

The spires and domes of churches and public buildings, as well as the forest of masts in the docks, show the prosperity of 18th century Liverpool. However, the surrounding fields still allow for a conventionally pretty rustic foreground.
