About this object

This watercolour was one of ten subjects, together with two title-page vignettes, which Turner produced to accompany Sir Walter Scott's text in 'The Provincial Antiquities and Picturesque Scenery of Scotland.' It was issued in parts between 1819 and 1826.

    A scene of a shipwreck in turbulent seas. In the foreground, running from the centre to the left, are portions of a wrecked vessel and a boat with sailors. The sea is stormy and there is lightning in the sky on the right. The Bass Rock is in the middle distance, dominating the centre of the scene.
