Shipping from the Liverpool Docks

Elsie Vacher, 1920 before

WAG 1166

About this object

This view looks north from Canning Dock, showing the Royal Liver Building on the right and the old Mersey Rail Pumping Station, with its original chimney, on the far left. The image seems to be reversed as the Liver Building should appear on the left. The shape of the schooners echoes the distant silhouette of the Liver Building, adding grandeur, height and depth to this intensely evocative image. The flock of flying seagulls momentarily breaks the graceful yet static composition and the boats and sheds on the quay are deeply etched to create a strong tonal contrast against the pale edifice of the Liver Building in the distance.
