To be researched further: provenance unclear. Stamp on reverse says 'Hove Museum & Art Gallery' and accession number 341.38.938 (both crossed through in ink).
Date of about 1651 is that given to the British Museum's state of the Claude Lorrain print (Museum number 1973.U.621).

Another ediition of this print is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Further prints of the same image are known under the title 'Shepherd and Shepherdess Conversing in a Landscape'.

  • Physical description
    A herdsman or shepherd is seated on a rock, in conversation with a girl (shepherdess) in a dress. The girl gestures towards some animals - cows, sheep and goats walk away from the couple by crossing over a river and climbing up the riverbank. In the distance the river snakes under a bridge, surrounded by hills and trees.
