This etching shows the reduced iron hulk of the HMS Conway on the river Mersey. Although stripped of most of its features, the ship’s bowsprit is still clearly defined. It appears superimposed against the Liverpool coastline, as if flattening the perspective. However, the varied textures and tonal contrast used between each vessel and its background create layers and depth within the composition.
