About this object

Fielding is known to have made and exhibited several watercolours of Byland Abbey in Yorkshire at the Old Watercolour Society, now known as the Royal Society of Watercolour. He exhibited views of the Abbey there in 1837, 1838, 1844 and 1852. Along with views of 'Raby Castle' (WAG 8185), it was one of his most popular subjects and he returned to it frequently.

    A watercolour painting depicting a sweeping view surrounding the Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire. The view is from a higher point [Hambleton Hill?] towards the plain where the remains of the Abbey are, in the centre of the painting, basking in the sunlight. In the foreground a man on horseback and a woman are walking down the country road, herding the cattle in front of them. In the distance are more rolling hills and plains into the far horizon. On the right in the distance dark clouds are building up in the otherwise blue sky.
