Merseyside, a storm

Frederick E Allen,

WAG 9073

About this object

This image depicts a wrecked sailboat after a ferocious storm. Its sails are still fluttering in the wind, while the one intact mast hints at its previous form. The pier in the distance may be part of the Dingle Oil Terminal, located immediately south of Liverpool’s most southern dock, the Herculaneum Dock. The shore in this image is possibly near Knott’s Hole or Otterspool.
Allen was born in Birkenhead, Wirral, and studied under William Charles Penn (1877-1968) at the Liverpool School of Art.

Purchased by the Walker Art Gallery in 1976, No. 9073
