Timber Wharf Liverpool

Frank Sir Short,

WAG 9522

About this object

This etching shows a timber yard in an unknown Liverpool dock. Canada, Canning, Queens and Brunswick Docks were all built for the timber trade to support nearby shipbuilding, and this timber yard possibly served one of them. The central yard is walled in by stacks of timber on the left and sheds on the right. The two figures on the elevated footbridge are operating a hand-powered travelling crane, which was used to lift wood from the wagons below. Part of another wagon in the right foreground completes this inverted triangular composition, effectively channelling the viewer’s vision towards the central warehouse.

  • Physical description
An etching of a timber yard in a Liverpool dock, taken from the ground level, showing an elevated bridge that spans the walls of the yard. On the bridge, there are two figures who seem to be manning a hand-powered travelling crane to lift bulks of wood from the wagon immediately underneath the bridge. Towards the distance is a view of a warehouse half obscured by a pile of timber in front of it. Lining the wall on the far left is also a high stack of timber. On the right foreground is a part of another wagon, two large wheels on an axle. The lower right corner of the paper is torn away.
