Henry Alexander Cole

Liverpool merchant (1862/3 - 1939), watercolour painter and Conservative Councillor

Alderman Henry A Cole studied art under British painter John Finnie (1829 - 1907) at the Liverpool School of Art, and later exhibited watercolours at the Walker Art Gallery's Autumn Exhibitions. His company manufactured belting for cotton factory machinery. He was registered as living at The Homestead, Vyner Road, Bidston, Birkenhead

He was a Conservative Councillor from 1912 and was Chairman of the Libraries, Museums and Arts Committee between 1921 and 1939. He was instrumental in organisaing the extension to the Walker Art Gallery which opened in 1933.
