Sir John Fowler

First baronet and civil engineer (1817 - 1898)

Fowler was a civil engineer who specialised in railway infrastructure. He was involved with the development of the London Underground and built the first railway bridge across the River Thames in London.

Fowler was also an art collector with several notable works by JMW Turner (1775 - 1851) and others including Peter de Wint (1784 - 1849), Samuel Prout (1783 - 1852) and John Everett Millias (1829 - 1896). His collection was sold at Christie's (06/05/2015) a year after his death.
