Elhanan Bicknell

Art patron and businessman (1788 - 1861)

Bicknell was a prosperous business man. His uncle, John Walter Langton (1746 - 1822), had invented a process of using spermaceti, derived from whale oil, for the manufacture of candles. He and Bicknell established a company, Langton and Bicknell, for this purpose in 1808.

Bicknell was a passionate patron of the arts. He was one of the few supporters of JMW Turner's (1775 - 1851) late and more abstract work.
