Hugh Munro of Novar

London-born art collector (1797 - 1864)

Hugh was the only son of Sir Alexander Munro (died 1809). Following his father's death Hugh became head of the Munros of Novar and succeeded to large estates, including that of Novar House, Ross-shire,and became one of the chief landed proprietors in the counties of Ross, Cromarty, and Moray.

He was an amateur artist and a distinguished collector and close friends with JMW Turner (1775 - 1851). The pair travelled together from France to Italy in 1836. Munro was also one of Turner's chief patrons and a rare supporter of his later and more abstract work. Munro was appointed one of Turner's executors.
