John Postle Heseltine

English etcher, stockbroker and art collector (1843 - 1929)

Heseltine was the son of Edward Heseltine (dates unrecorded) and Mary Norfor (dates unrecorded). He was a stockbroker and senior partner in the firm Heseltine, Powell & Co. He was married to Sarah Edmonson (dates unrecorded) in 1866.

Heseltine was a Trustee of the National Gallery in London from 1893. He collected paintings by European masters as well as drawings and watercolours by English artists. He made several donations to the National Gallery during his life. A catalogue of his collection was published after his death in 1935, called 'Catalogue of the Celebrated Collection of the Late J.P. Heseltine, Esq: Comprising Fine Paintings by Old & Modern Masters, Important Old & Modern Drawings by Artists of the Continental Schools and Important Drawings & Water-colours by English Masters'.

Heseltine was also an accomplished etcher. He was good friends with the artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) and a member of the Arts Club between 1868 and 1892. He exhibited at the Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Dowdeswell Galleries, all in London, between 1880 and 1928.
