Forgeries of Turner’s work had already begun to appear during the artist’s lifetime. On at least 13 occasions he purchased and destroyed the fakes to protect his future reputation. He would surely have done the same when this one was sold by his early patron Dr Thomas Monro in 1833, suggesting this work could be authentic.
