Gold snuffbox, Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham, 1846

Ornate gold snuff box.

Presented to Captain McBride for 16 years' service as Dock Master of the Clarence Dock, Liverpool. From 1700 to 1830 it was more fashionable to sniff up tobacco in the form of snuff than to smoke it.

Purchased with the assistance of the National Art Collections Fund, 1978.
