By carving, scratching, piercing, punching, etching and cutting away the surface of an object, pleasing decorative effects can be achieved. Very finely drawn decoration, where only a small amount of the surface is removed, can be made using small hand held tools. Larger machines can be used to produce deep cutting and repetitive stamped out shapes.
