Gemstone and gold; most of the intaglios date from the Roman period, the rest and the gold mount are later, probably made in Italy, 1790-1810
During the Roman period these gemstones were worn in rings and used as seals. They have been set in a gold mount, at the start of the 19th century, to make a fashionable piece of jewellery.
Intaglio is the name given to metals or stones with designs carved into their surfaces.
