Dante and Beatrice

Film Screening, County Sessions House

15 - 19 November 2004, Free Admission

Yellow House - one of the country's leading youth arts organisations will be giving their feature-length 'Dante and Beatrice' its premiere run in County Sessions House, adjacent to Walker Art Gallery. It will run at 7pm every night from Monday 15 November to Friday 19 November, free admission with tickets available from the information desk in Walker Art Gallery.

The 90 minute film transfers the 14th Century poem from Renaissance Florence to contemporary Liverpool. A modern day Dante takes a journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven in search of his love, Beatrice, through some of the city's most famous locations including Walker Art Gallery.

Walker Art Gallery inspired the film after young people with 'Yellow House' saw Henry Holliday's painting 'Dante and Beatrice', depicting Beatrice refusing to greet Dante in the street. In the film, paintings hanging in Walker Art Gallery have been chosen to represent Heaven and Hell.

A total of 20 young people were involved on all parts of the production from designing, acting, and recording to special effects, editing and documenting. The group also enlisted noted Liverpool poets such as Mohammed Khalil who plays Virgil, Levi Tafari, Bisharka Sharka and Dinesh Allirajah to guide Dante through to Heaven.

'Dante and Beatrice' is one of 80 projects - and one of four films - funded by the Liverpool City Council led £2m Creative Community programme to celebrate Liverpool's second Capital of Culture themed year Faith in One City.

Yellow House is a registered charity that is totally devoted to the work with young people. They have an open door policy and work with young people regardless of their class, race, ability or financial/family situation. Their aim is to especially encourage those young people who come from difficult backgrounds and were previously denied access to art, to participate in art in its various forms.
