The subject of this work remains elusive; the title is a later descriptive tag. It may be another personal interpretation by McNair of the opposing forces of good and evil and the nurturing role of mother earth.

The latter was a theme repeated in the Knox bookplate in which a similar pair of female figures are referred to as ‘middle earth’ which nourished the Tree of Knowledge.
