About this object

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana met in 1980 while working for the same employer. They launched their joint brand in 1985 and released their first collection in 1986. Dolce and Gabbana were an openly gay couple for many years and are still business partners despite the end of their personal relationship in 2005.

In the 1990s, one of the Dolce and Gabbana signature looks was the ‘body-con’ dress. Short for ‘body conscious’, this is a tight, clinging style, often incorporating Lycra, that shows off the wearer’s curves.

Lycra is the trade name for an elastic fibre made from polyurethane by the American company Du Pont de Nemours.
