Man's jumper, John Galliano, 1985

WAG 1994.91

About this object

John Galliano was born in Gibraltar and moved to London with his family in 1966, aged six. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art with a first class degree in 1984, his entire graduation collection was bought by the London fashion boutique Brown’s.
This jumper, one of his earliest designs, shows some influence from punk garments of the late 1970s, with its looped surface and ruched-up sleeves.
After working independently in London and Paris for more than ten years, in 1995 Galliano was appointed head designer at French couturier Givenchy, before moving to Christian Dior in 1996. He is currently creative director at Maison Margiela.
