1930s, Earthenware, transfer-printed, hand-painted, Lent by B. Meyer
Oriental-style jars and covers were very fashionable in the inter-war years, and were produced by a number of factories. This example has a Dog of Fo (guardian of a Buddhist temple) on the lid and is a version of the Orient pattern. The stylish red and black decoration is emphasised by zigzags and lightning flashes, these motifs were very popular with European designers at the time.
