'Henry VIII and his Six Wives'

Colour illustration of a bearded man with a plumed hat surrounded by six women

Painted in 1979 for a Falcon Games jigsaw.

This striking circular design - a group of portrait miniatures - is one of Kirby’s most finely worked paintings for a jigsaw puzzle. Kirby’s invoice to Falcon was for £500, representing twice his usual fee for such a commission. The complexity of the work could explain this, although it is unclear whether he produced more than one design.
