'Reaper Man'

Colourful fantasy scene showing a skeleton sitting under a tree and holding a scythe

Painted 1991 for the 1991 Gollancz edition.

In one of his most memorable Discworld paintings Kirby creates a tranquil, Pre-Raphaelite rural idyll, occupied by Death; having been made temporarily redundant, he is forced to take on farm labouring. In a nod at Dutch 17th century memento mori paintings, Kirby includes symbolic reminders of mortality in the hour-glasses and the ‘nibbled’ still life on the picnic rug. The Death of Rats (Grim Squeaker) sits on Death’s knee whilst Sal, a girl rescued by Death from a burning pub, sits contentedly alongside.
