Out of this World: the art of Josh Kirby
Painted 1996 for Gollancz/Vista, 1996. Commissioned for a Discworld quizbook by David Langford.
From left to right:
Detritus: A troll. Part of Ankh-Morpork’s City Watch. Carries a self-styled crossbow called the Piecemaker. Wears a brain-cooling helmet which improves his intelligence.
Gytha ‘Nanny’ Ogg: Grandmother to a large family, a witch and coven member. Likes a drink. Or two.
Corporal CW ST J Nobbs: Known as ‘Nobby’. A City Watch member and prolific thief. Carries a certificate proving he is human.
Rincewind: Failed wizard and former Unseen University student. Excels at fleeing from trouble: “I run, therefore I am.” Has a very powerful spell trapped in his head, so is much sought after.
Death: Skeletal yet affable, Death ALWAYS SPEAKS IN CAPITAL LETTERS. Has been pursuing Rincewind for some time.
Angua: Sergeant in Ankh-Morpork’s City Watch. She is part werewolf, part vegetarian, and can smell colours.
Carrot Ironfoundersoon: Good-natured Captain of the City Militia. A six-foot-six-inch dwarf. Adopted, he is possibly the true heir to Ankh-Morpork’s throne.
Esmeralda ‘Granny’ Weatherwax: Believed (by herself) to be Discworld’s greatest witch. Lives in a village called Bad Ass (named after a disobedient donkey). Prefers trickery to spells.
