Out of this World: the art of Josh Kirby

Cover proof from the Corgi Books edition of c1962 of the book by Dorothy Baker. Probably painted 1961/2.
Dorothy Baker’s first novel (1938) was inspired by the music of acclaimed jazz musician Leon (Bix) Beiderbecke, who died tragically young in 1931. The book was made into a controversial film (1950) starring Kirk Douglas. Kirby’s loosely painted original artwork contains a reference to the alcoholism that killed ‘Beiderbecke’. This was lost when the cover was cropped for publication.
