This is one of the gouache sketches for the main Valentine Pontifex painting, shown in the exhibition. This picture is the lower image, hidden beneath an upper image painted in gouache onto an acetate sheet. The towering form of Lord Valentine’s castle rises at its centre, approached by a flotilla of levitating vessels.
