Beuys' Sleighs

Joseph Beuys’ ‘The Pack’ (1969) draws on his traumatic experience of being saved from a plane crash in 1943 by nomadic Tartars.

It consists of a Volkswagen bus with 20 sledges, each carrying felt, fat and a flashlight. Much of Beuys’ work draws on this experience.
