"I wanted to capture The Queen herself and her warm personality, rather than do a formal portrait, full of pomp and splendour, and I think I’ve achieved that.

I had the canvas close to Her Majesty so that I painted what I saw in exactly the same scale as I saw it. Had I been further back, I would have instinctively painted a much smaller image of The Queen."
