George Romney, British art's forgotten genius
This exhibition was held at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in 2002.
The subject is again taken from Aeschylus, as translated by Robert Potter. The tragedy Prometheus Bound concerns Prometheus's punishment by Jupiter for the crime of having given fire to mortals.
Of the eighteen cartoons, this one is in the worst condition. All the cartoons have suffered losses, especially around the edges, and have been patched and retouched. Here the restoration may well extend to the outlines of the figures themselves, drawn in a hesitant, tremulous style at odds with Romney's customary elegance.
