George Romney, British art's forgotten genius
This exhibition was held at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in 2002.
The episode depicted in the second Cupid and Psyche cartoon is effectively a pendant of the first and is a very free rendition of the text on Romney's part. The figure of Psyche here, with her extraordinarily elongated legs an almost abstract concoction of sinuous curves, is one of the most mannered in the whole of the Romney canon.
