'Psyche Supplicating Juno'

A woman in classical dress kneels on the floor before a standing woman

In the third cartoon the story has moved some way forward. Psyche has been banished from Cupid's palace, having learnt the identity of her lover in defiance of his wishes. Venus, already jealous of Psyche's beauty, is infuriated that she has won Cupid's love and is seeking vengeance. Psyche, with nowhere else to turn, is begging for the help of Juno, queen of the Gods.

For this cartoon, for the first time in the series, Romney made a number of sketches. It may be that, having made the first two cartoons in a blaze of inspiration, he paused here to take stock of the project.
