Jewel casket, Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Photograph of a casket with various scenes painted on the side

Painted wood, with iron frame, hinges and clasp, made before 1862, 17.7 x 29.2 x 17.7cm, The Society of Antiquaries of London (Kelmscott Manor)

The casket was painted by Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal with scenes inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts. It later belonged to Jane Morris. The form of the casket recalls a reliquary decorated by Hans Memling that Rossetti had seen in Bruges.
