'Christina Rossetti', Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Portrait drawing of a woman with the left side of her face in shadow

Coloured chalks on paper, dated 1877, 38.7 x 29.8cm, Private collection, courtesy of Peter Nahum at The Leicester Galleries, London

Like the double portrait of Christina and Frances, this was among the drawings made at Herne Bay in 1877.

By this date, Christina had published a substantial body of poetry, including the two volumes designed by her brother. Her correspondence with her brother shows that the two constantly helped and advised one another on their poetic work.
