Geoffrey Armstrong was born in South Africa in 1945. He studied at Johannesburg School of Art and held one-person exhibitions in Johannesburg in the mid-60s before moving to the UK in 1969. His first one-person exhibitions in London were at the Drian Galleries, 1971 and '72. He established a painting studio in Liverpool in 1990. During the 1990s his work in the UK and South Africa has been chiefly of an outdoor and environmental character.
