Oil and acrylic on canvas Wayne Lloyd was born in 1964. He studied at Brighton College of Art 1984-87 and Goldsmiths' College 1988-90. His first group exhibition was 'Gang Warfare' Independent Art Space London (also shown in Dallas, Texas) 1995. Between 1996 and 2000 he participated in a number of BANK projects which included his one-person show, Gallerie Winner, 34 Underwood St London 1998. Recent group shows and events include Anthony Wilkinson Gallery London 1999, 'Century City' Tate Modern 2001, 'Unfortunate' Whitechapel Art Gallery 2001 and 'Ten Seconds to What?' Jeffrey Charles Gallery London 2002.
My intention is to describe and explain the work from the outset by disallowing misinterpretations or intuitive cognition. The titles dominate the canvas. Written in unequivocal black, they give a reason for the painting's existence, and even its art-historical relevance. Shapes and colours are described by smaller words. These may describe an aspect of the abstract painting, e.g. 'directional strokes', or the colour, e.g. 'red'. By communicating 'more' than the abstract image, I attempt to understand the idea of 'meaning' in the work, and whether an explanation is in itself the work. I hope to distil the difference between knowing the work and experiencing it."
